Where to find cheap accomodation in Italy?

I am going to Italy from Sep 22nd to Sep 30th (2009). I plan to go to Rome (4 days), Venice (2 days) and Florence (2 days). I will be accompanied by my wife. We are looking to find a private accomodation (hostel, guesthouse, hotel, apartment) with easy access to the main attractions. Can anyone help us out with it? Our budget is $75/ night.

Outside of Venice rooms are much cheaper, but less romantic

I know the B&Bs only as recommendation of friends. I normally stay at friend’s homes or youth hostels (OK for singles but not really nice for couples)
